Nestled in the foothills of beautiful Laurel Highlands, Uniontown’s historic district shares a portion of the 800 mile National Road; the nation’s first federally funded interstate highway built between 1811 and 1839 affording travelers an all-weather road through which they could more safely navigate the rugged Allegheny Mountains.
A key building in downtown Uniontown is the Fayette Building, an eleven-story, 200,000 square foot Daniel Burnham design constructed in 1902 for First National Bank. Built at a cost of $1.1 Million, the structure boasted some 750 rooms. The bank utilized the basement and first floor, professional space was sandwiched in the second through the seventh, and the top four floors were reserved for apartment living. The rotunda still stands a living memory of the transactions that took place around the tellers’ station.
The city is also home to the numerous other historic landmarks including the restored State Theatre for the Arts, a fully operational movie theatre that doubles for small stage performances.
The Titlow Hotel & Grille once served travelers providing overnight accommodations and a hot meal. Now the venue serves the city as a destination where outstanding food beacons guests from around the region.
The magnificently renovated historic Fayette County Court House elicits an assortment of reactions. People are awed by the master craftsmanship, stirred by respect for the judicial system it represents, and a bit disquieted by the awareness of the momentous historic decisions that have been handed down within the walls of the stately lady.
